Scorsese at the Cinémathèque: 6 eyes on a freedman of the 7th art – The Obs

The coming time will scorsésiens or will not. Since October 12, the Lumière Film Festival pays tribute to the director of “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Raging Bull,” and hand him his prize Light 16. Next spring will release his new film, “Silence”, with Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel, on the journey of the Jesuits in the seventeenth century Japan, which is expected to return at the next Cannes Film Festival. And for the first time in France, the French Cinematheque dedicates, from October 14, a large exhibition (accompanied by a retrospective) than Michael Powell called “the Goya of 10th Street.”

“L’Observateur” chose some exclusive documents are shown there. They are commented by Scorsese himself and by some of its most loyal employees, including Leonardo DiCaprio.

1 “‘Taxi Driver’ and I “

& gt; Leonardo DiCaprio, actor

Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle role, the driver of “Taxi Driver”, 1976.
(Columbia Pictures)

“Taxi Driver” is one of my favorite movies. I saw 15 years ago when I was about to turn with Robert De Niro [in "Boy's Life", Ed] . It was the first time I felt betrayed by the main character. I empathize with Travis Bickle, I felt close to him until it comes out a gun from his sleeve and make a carnage. I was confused. Minutes before, I identified with that lonely taxi driver and frustrated, I understood his social maladjustment, I shared his distress when he took this girl to see a porn movie and in it offended. And suddenly, there he was so totally unacceptable. This is of great ambiguity to the final reversal with parents of the prostitute who thank him for saving their daughter. “Taxi Driver” is the ultimate independent film. I would have dreamed of playing the role of Travis Bickle.

In my opinion, the Scorsese-De Niro collaboration is the most important in the history of cinema. From the moment I discovered their films, I knew how to answer the question:

Which director would you work “

Soon after, I ‘? heard of “Gangs of New York.” Marty was developing this project for years, and it was the only one whose protagonist was my age. At 18, I changed my agent to get closer. Six years later, I ate a pad Thai on the set of “The Beach” in Thailand, when I received a call from Mr. Scorsese wire. I had the feeling to have won the lottery.

my childhood, I started collecting 45s. But, as I was living with my family in a three-piece, it was necessary that I find a place to store them, and I bought a box. I ‘ I typed in my own index

Inside, there. “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven”, “Rang Tang Ding Dong” from The Cellos, one of the favorite songs of Harvey Keitel, he sings in “Taxi Driver”. We is also served in “Bringing out the Dead”.

“You” of Aquatones was one of my favorites. It was used in “Mean Streets.” Besides, most of the songs that we hear in “Mean Streets” come from the 45s that box and another. They were used as is, with their stripes on the soundtrack.

3 “A camera on the cross of Christ”

& gt; By Michael Ballhaus, cinematographer

Willem Dafoe during the filming of “The Last Temptation of Christ” in 1988.
(Universal City Studios Inc.)

This is one of those exciting plans including Marty secrecy, where the camera movement evokes a world changing. Camera had been attached to the cross so that it is always at the center of the image and that one discovers things such as Jesus sees them at the time of the crucifixion. It is a beautiful metaphor: his gaze rises from the ground to overhang the world

If I had to choose another great shot that we shot together, it would be the clip of “. Goodfellas “where Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) arrives at the Copacabana with his fiancee (Lorraine Bracco). It tells everything that can not be told in words. The entrance through the back door, crossed backstage and kitchens, Henry distributes tickets to staff the table that servers they stand at the forefront in the room … It’s a way for Henry to seduce Karen , to make him understand who he is, the influence he has. All these plans require a long preparation. Mount the camera on the cross was not easy. Similarly for the plan in the Copacabana, which had to be carefully organized. It was rebuilt eight times in three hours.

What is wonderful with Marty, is that everything is always very prepared. Except on “Departed.” A friend directors asked him to move the shoot to Jack Nicholson is free for his film. We therefore started six weeks before the scheduled date. Marty was under pressure. He asked the actors to help him, and Nicholson began to rewrite the whole scenario, add a character … It was very strange. The first two weeks, Nicholson was not running, everything went very well. Then when it happened, Marty felt helpless. He understood that he could not direct it. He asked: “How would you play the scene?” Nicholson and did what he wanted. It was a very frustrating experience. Marty has resented, it was totally depressed. He told his editor, Thelma Schoonmaker:

Coupons film as much as we can, that people do not realize how bad it is “

. He thought that “the Departed” was his worst film. When his friends saw him and told him it was good, he did not believe them. The first projection to 400 people was a success. It is realized that it was not so bad. The funny? He received his first and only Oscar for this film.

4 “Scorsese like clothes “

” Gangs of New York “is a fiction based on real facts These gangs have existed Their neighborhood, The Five Points was a world unto itself in New York I granted myself some liberties -… especially for women dresses, which obeyed more Victorian style – but, overall, the costumes of the film are true to reality. The audience was certainly surprised to discover as colorful. It is more easily imagine the clothes of the nineteenth century in black and white.

When I work with Scorsese, it illustrates everything that we talk with a reference to another film, cites this or that detail of a feature film out there sometimes more than fifty years. It is very visual. Certainly, any director must be visual. However, in most cases, this is not the case. Scorsese understands and loves clothes. When an actor comes on stage in an outfit he wears for the first time, he touches. He feels the garment. Especially men’s suits. It happened to me, especially because he loved the costume of a character, to make him make a custom for his personal use. It happened on “Aviator” and “Hugo Cabret”.

The other thing I like about him is his love of shoes. In nine out of ten movies, we do not see the shoes. Martin Scorsese, he devotes close-ups.

5 “A raconteur of extraordinary stories”

I do not know if people know how Martin Scorsese’s funny. It is an extraordinary storyteller stories. It is also very generous, always open to dialogue. He knows everything about all the films and has a deep desire to share his knowledge unheard of on film.

It does so through its foundation [The Film Foundation, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of world film heritage, Ed] , but also every day with his teams, friends. You learn all the time with him. On each of his films, he takes a young apprentice who spends the whole film at his side, a role I want.
