President US Barack Obama on Friday congratulated his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto for the arrest there is a week of drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Mexico wants to delay his extradition. According to a report of the phone call released by the White House, the two leaders also stressed that the “pillars” of the relationship between the two neighboring countries were “a genuine spirit of cooperation on issues of security and robust economic ties. ” Enrique Pena Nieto had so far refused to extradite the renowned drug trafficker, promising to try him in Mexico. But the incredible escape of Guzman in July, through a tunnel dug under the Altiplano maximum security prison near Mexico City, has dealt a heavy blow to the credibility of the government and has changed the situation.

The extradition procedure, however, take at least a year or more if his lawyers use every legal recourse. The drug dealer had already escaped from a high security Mexican prison in 2001 hidden in a laundry basket.
