Rene Angelil, husband and impresario Celine Dion, died at 73 – L’Express

The message was posted on the evening of 14 January on the Facebook page of Celine Dion: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Rene Angelil, 73, died this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer. The family wishes to mourn in privacy. Additional information will be communicated in the coming days. ”

Rene Angelil had undergone the removal of a cancerous tumor in the throat in December 2013, recurrence of cancer in the cervical region 15 years earlier. In June 2014, he retired as qu’imprésario Celine Dion. In August of the same year, the singer announced that it was suspending all professional activities “in order to focus 100% on the health of her husband.”

A year later, days before his return on stage in Las Vegas, she had revealed that he did not for long. “When it happens, it happens. But my most important job is to tell my husband that we’re fine. I’ll take care of the children. You have seen us from the sky,” she had then said the USA Today chain.

Born in 1942 in Montreal, Angelil Celine Dion had met in 1981, when she was at the time only 12 years old. In 1988 she won the Eurovision Song Contest. It was on his advice she had learned English in order to give an international dimension to his career. The couple was married in 1994. He had three children: René-Charles and twins Eddy and Nelson. René Angélil was already the father of three children.

According to TMZ, Celine Dion has canceled two shows at Caesars Palace. She should be back on stage on February 23.

Tributes Prime Minister and artists

There were many tributes following the death. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his “deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rene Angelil, especially to his wife Celine Dion and her children.”

The singer Coeur de pirate, born in Montreal in the same city as René Angélil, or the young Canadian director Xavier Dolan, whose soundtrack of the latest feature included a title of Celine Dion , reacted on Twitter:

Flags at half mast in Montreal

In France, several personalities have also wanted to express their sadness tonight after learning death of the husband of Celine Dion.

Child of Montreal, the city immediately paid tribute to this “monument from the show”, as stated by its mayor Denis Coderre, putting the flags at half mast on official buildings.
