Abdellatif Kechiche ordered to pay 180,000 euros to MK2 – The World

Abdellatif Kechiche May 26 at the presentation of the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

The director Abdellatif Kechiche was ordered to pay 180,000 euros to the production company of Marin Karmitz, MK2. In a decision issued on January 16, posted on the site BFMTV.com, which reveals information, the judges of the High Court of Paris considered that the filmmaker had “committed breaches of its obligations” in its contract with the firm.

Under the terms of that document, signed in April 2008, Abdellatif Kechiche was committed “to offer exclusively to the company MK2 (…) his next three films, including Black Venus , while in progress “. All against a fee of 270,000 euros. But relations between the director and the firm blur around the issue of the length of this feature.

Therefore, the collaboration seems obsolete. The filmmaker has proposed “without the previously mentioned with the company, new film projects to other producers” , says the judgment. This is particularly the case of The Life of Adele , basking in the Golden Palm at Cannes in 2013, which was produced by Wild Bunch and Quat’sous films.

Contacted by Agence France-Presse, the lawyer Abdellatif Kechiche, M th William Lu, denied the allegations: “Many synopsis [have] been proposed by [my client]. “ None was found admissible. ” After Black Venus MK2 actually had no desire to make another film with Mr. Kechiche. “

The filmmaker, who claimed his side € 6.5 million ” in compensation for the material, artistic and professional “, was dismissed. He considered in particular that when he was in agreement with the company, the pressure exerted by it prevented him from working for four years.
