“Blue & Lonesome” by the Rolling Stones : return to the past – The World

Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, during their concert in Havana on march 25, 2016.

a Few weeks after the release of a boxed set in a limited edition of their albums of the 1960′s mono version – sold-out the period before the Christmas shopping – and Havana Moon, Rolling Stones Records-Eagle Vision/Universal Music), keepsake CD and DVD of their concert in Cuba on march 25, The Rolling Stones continue to occupy the field with a new album. On the cover, not to mention the Rolling Stones, but their logo, a language derived, designed in 1971 by artist John Pasche, which is enough to identify them. And just a title, Blue & Lonesome.

This twenty-third studio album of the group – without taking into account the variants of the editions for the american market in the early 1960s – had been announced before release, on December 2, as a disc of blues. Taken by the side electric and urban design in the genre, such as rock ‘ n ‘ roll origins has fed the Stones. The blues, therefore, without the musical taste of the day (sin cute singer Mick Jagger) or turn reggae (one of the guitarist Keith Richards). Twelve-times themes, for most of the 1950s and 1960s, written and/or performed by Walter Jacobs, said Little Walter, Chester Burnett, said Howlin’Wolf, Willie Dixon, Samuel Maghett, ” said Magic Sam, Jimmy Reed, Otis Hicks said Lightnin’Slim…

Play the blues

The choice is quite erudite avoids in most cases the classic blues ressassés to the environment. In the notes that are in a few lines of each song, the Stones are also taking a perverse pleasure to point out that these songs – except the famous I Can’t Quit You Baby and I Gotta Go – are not entered in the rankings of the best sales.

In a long article by John Pareles for the New York Times of November 9, the Stones and producer Don Was explains the genesis and the conditions of registration of Blue & Lonesome. At the end of 2015, Jagger, Richards, guitarist Ron Wood and drummer Charlie Watts are at the British Grove Studios in London, with bassist Darryl Jones, and keyboardists Chuck Leavell and Matt Clifford. The Stones are now working on new compositions. That wouldn’t come. To relax, to put in train, as they are accustomed to for ages, they play some blues. Eureka!!!, the light, remisons the new songs and record our recreations blues.

these are played with an obvious-going, no-frills, in a manner quite rough and raw while maintaining the sonic identity the Rolling Stones. Which is rather in shape, as it is in the interaction of the guitars, the belief in the voice of Jagger, by also ubiquitous on the harmonica, the hits of Charlie Watts, who can give expression to its flexibility jazz. The mixer gives them the nice part.

as Soon as the first song, Just Your Fool, the harmonica player Little Walter, sets the tone. The versions of the Stones remain in the footsteps of the originals, with here and there small differences : an attack of introduction, a few measures soloists, a tone, not of brass for Everybody Knows About My Good Thing but as a guest guitarist Eric Clapton… A fidelity to their inspiration which also refers to their past, when their first three albums, in 1964 and 1965, had a majority of times themes rhythm’n’blues, rock’n’roll and blues.
