Belgian artist, barely appointed artistic director of the event, announced Saturday, April 2 he wanted to leave his job after being accused of established programming “not enough Greek.” He denounces the lack of artistic freedom.

Not enough “Greek” programming Jan Fabre? While the criticism comes, the Belgian artist Jan Fabre has decided to drop his post as artistic director of the Festival of Athens and Epidaurus, which he had recently been appointed. Saturday, April 2, he announced his resignation, received with “great concern” by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

“I quit [...] the artistic director of the Greek Festival, wrote the choreographer and director in a letter released by the ministry. I had accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Culture to make artistic choices freely. This does not seem possible in Greece. I do not want to work in a hostile environment artistic, to which I had come to the heart and mind open. ” The Belgian artist also wishes “good luck” to the Greek artists who will carry the torch.

Jan Fabre was appointed in February by the leftist government of Alexis Tsipras for four years, replacing the former director George Loukos, appointed in 2006 by a Conservative government. The latter was fired in December after being charged following losses of 2.7 million euros, supported by the Greek State.

Jan Fabre, generally credited by his admirers a radical renewal of the scene but regularly accused by his detractors of free provocation, was unveiled Tuesday a few highlights of the festival this year, including one in the spotlight of Belgian artists. An announcement that caused an outcry in Greece by artists in the press and among the opposition parties.

“They declared a persona non grata internationally acclaimed designer and totally disdained his artistic work “

the Greek Minister of Culture, Aristidis Baltas, did not hide his bitterness in Saturday’s statement, recalling that Jan Fabre came to provide assistance to Greece in crisis, limiting his salary to look after the festival and present productions of his troop to 20,000 euros per year. Aristides Baltas believes that the artist was a victim of “a coordinated attack political parties, the media and part of the art world,” they “calling it an anti-Greek structured four-year program, aimed not only to expand the international character of the festival but also to make the Greek creations international “.

” They declared persona non grata internationally acclaimed designer and totally disdained his artistic work, humiliating any sense of artistic freedom, “says the minister, before promising steps” for the best possible operation “of the festival this year, despite the circumstances. The International Festival of Athens and Épidote be held from June to mid-August 2016, mainly in the ancient theater of Epidaurus.
