EXCLUSIVE – Bryan Singer and James McAvoy unveil X-Men Apocalypse – Screenrush

Interview by Emmanuel Itier ▪ Tuesday, February 9, 2016 – There are 3 minutes

In 2015, AlloCiné was able to go on filming the new installment of the saga mutant, led by Bryan Singer still involved and James McAvoy … bald. A little more than three months of the return of X-Men, they tell us a little more.

Screenrush: What was the inspiration for X-Men: Apocalypse

Bryan Singer: It’s my fifth X-Men. So I had to rack my brain for inspiration. I remembered a book full of ancient aliens, pyramids, mysteries: Chariots of the Gods . I have always been fascinated by all these myths about the gods of religion … Have we been visited by really-is that aliens or that this is only a figment of our imagination? Days of Future Past was a film about time travel and robots. This time, I attack the gods and religion. And it inspires me because I am fascinated by these billions of people who have a faith, a religion and who believe with all their might. So this is kind of what we explore in this new story. It’s also a film that has just concluded the first two reboots the franchise. When you see X-Men: Apocalypse, you can imagine that this is a trilogy that I finish here

What’s different with this new album, compared to other films. the saga

Bryan Singer : In other films, it was the conflict between mutants and humans, but in this movie, the clash is between a super mutant and our X-Men. The “ugly” comes in ancient times and is not seen as a mutant but rather a God. It does not distinguish between mutants and humans. He sees only those who are strong and the weak. And so suddenly, humans and the X-Men will have to unite against this new destructive force.

How was the reinvention or rather the presentation of all these new characters?

Bryan Singer : It started when Patrick Stewart, in one of the previous films, wanted to know the origin of his character. So I explained to him where he came from, and what his relationship with Magneto. And from there came the idea of a reboot of the franchise with the young X-Men, X-Men: First. The initial idea was to look at Magneto and Charles. But now we can present other series heroes we have established a solid foundation in understanding the dynamics and the origin of the X-Men, and now I can afford to introduce more heroes. In all, we have a dozen new characters. What makes the shooting and some epic scenes to shoot.

The X-Men he offers a reflection on recent events, be it terrorism, migrant or other phenomena?

Bryan Singer : Absolutely and although X -Men are mostly a glance at the 70 or 80, it is clear that today we face the same problems of racial tensions, religious or economic. Besides epidemic or pandemic crisis and the environmental crisis with global warming. The X-Men are a metaphor, a mirror of our society. And that’s what I like to deal with these films. If it was only to stage superhero fights with lots of effects, it does not interest me. Instead, give a political dimension to these films inspires and educates the public -j’espère- a bit.

Another theme in the heart of the X-Men, is the family …

Bryan Singer : Absolutely. I who am the only son with relatives who live in New Jersey, while I travel the world, I often think about the concept of family. My family, they are my friends and my colleagues. And recently, five months ago, I had my first baby. So I also began to feel like a father. And I explore some of these new feelings, this new dynamic in this film. Especially between Magneto and his son but also the relation “father / daughter” between Raven and Charles. I think the concept of family has changed nowadays and that marriage for all was also explode the little box “classic” and cliché of what a family. A family is when it weaves unbreakable bonds between us and protectors. And that is what is at the heart of the X-Men. They are a family that nothing can destroy

X-Men: Apocalypse Interview

Screenrush: what does it mean to you to be part of this great adventure mutant

James McAvoy: freedom finally, to be bald! (laughs) It’s really liberating to have no hair: it feels bare two seconds … and then you feel really special supra. I admit I did get a shock the first time I saw myself in a mirror. After that, it’s true that it looks weird to have already made three X-Men. I think this is the most explosive and most successful. Somehow, I’m so relieved that Charles became the figurehead, the real teacher he has always been at the bottom of itself. It took three films, but it is worth it. What’s interesting with my character, is to see how his maturity and his noblest trait of character is empathy toward others and himself. I think “feel” really the emotions of others gives him extraordinary powers. This empathy allows her to also teach more profoundly because I believe that a good teacher is someone who sees the student in the exact emotion to communicate with the other into accepting this or that teaching.

How does it feel Charles now that Moira Mc Taggert (Rose Byrne) is back in his life?

James McAvoy : Definitely it is … hot! (laughs) ! It gives meaning to his life, definitely.

it Feels guilt for having erased his memory?

James McAvoy : Yes. Not in the slightest! (laughs) Of course, it’s hard to forgive such an act. And there’s a scene where he confesses with respect to this situation, in which he expressed remorse. Charles is in love with Moira and he will do everything to protect it. I am delighted that Rose back because it is full of energy, it is really fantastic and so much fun. There are actually a lot of humor in this film, and I think that’s a good thing. This gives a little oxygen and a pause between action scenes breathtaking. And believe me, it really is breathtaking. Guaranteed. What is also different in X-Men, is the notion of “family” of human relationships between the characters. I think it is unique in the Marvel universe and superhero in general. Beyond the popcorn, this is a humanistic study reports, ties between all these characters.

Do you have more action scenes in this movie?

James McAvoy : Absolutely, it is a teacher fighter and pro-active. But nothing is free and that’s not action for action. This is the dramatic action that allows the story to progress. Besides, you were able to realize by watching the trailer …
