Radiohead sign a spleen gem with “A Moon Shaped Pool” – francetv info

Contemporary Sadness

At a time of listening to a new album from Radiohead, it is never a question of laughing. However, there are two categories of sad albums. Those likely to sink into the unremitting depression and those intended to relieve and support the spleen by empathy effect. “Shaped Moon Pool” is one of them. Despite his deep melancholy, this disc recorded in the south of France, the studios La Fabrique in Saint-Remy de Provence, is not weighted with lead. It is even bright, brittle brightness similar to the last flashing lights of stars at the edge of extinction.

Double spleen

If Thom Yorke lyrics are elliptical, the bits that one perceives during the advance of the disc – ‘This is a flow panic attack’, “it’s too late the damage is done”, “Now we’re trapped, we are helpless to resist in our darkest hour” etc. – saying long enough. Few bands before them have been able to translate more acutely contemporary disenchantment. The headlong rush of the company, our hopeless inertia and extinction programmed civilization are at the heart of this disc. But not only.

The words of the tormented soul singer has never been as sincere and poignant. They will twist your guts more sensitive to tears (yes, it was blubbering). Thom Yorke has indeed broken last summer with Rachel Owens, the mother of his two children, a woman who shared his life for 23 years, and seems to address her directly several times, especially Ful Stop ( “You really messed up everyhting, Why should I be good if you’re not? ‘). the words so often here in both directions, including both the infinitely personal and global terribly.

Daydreaming, iconic album

“Daydreaming”, second single released last Friday, is emblematic of the album musically. Majestic with its slow, teeming with micro-detail, the wrapping of his dna piano intriguing textures and a wonderful part of strings, this daydream is representative of the result reached by this group of homing ninth album. a non-linear and complex songwriting that yet never loses the thread nor the listener’s attention.

a majority of familiar titles

If this album is particularly long, with eleven tracks and over 50 minutes, a majority of songs were already known fans. Besides the two singles released last week ( “Burn the witch” and “Daydreaming”), other securities they were already familiar. “Identitik” and “Ful Stop” were played during the previous tour of “The King of Limbs” (2011). “Present tense” accents and bossa nova was heard most recently on tour with Atoms For Peace, the side project of Thom Yorke. “True Love Waits” which closes the album, is perhaps the oldest of all: played on stage since the days of “The Bend” in 1995 it was never recorded in the studio. Finally, “Desert Island Disc” and “The Numbers” were unveiled in December at the acoustic concert at the Trianon Thom Yorke on the sidelines of Cop21 in Paris.

“The Numbers” rant on global warming climate

in December, when Thom Yorke played the new song on the margins of Cop21, he had another name: “Silent Spring.” Known for its ecological commitment, Thom Yorke had always said he would not write song about his beliefs on the matter because it would necessarily be “crap”. Well he contradicts himself with “The Numbers” and applauded. Because this song is a rousing call to stand up, take responsibility and restore hope.

“We are of the earth / To her we do return / The future is inside us / It’s not somewhere else”, sing t- he (We come from the earth / it is to her that we return / the future is in us / They do anywhere else.) “We call upon people / People-have this power / the numbers do not decide / Your system is a lie … We’ll all take back what is ours “(We call on peupe / The people that power / The numbers do not decide / Your system is a lie … We will take what is ours). Not only it is not silly but even absolute wonders of this album with its simple melody, his mystical intro to Alice Coltrane, his guitars and piano recalling Pink Floyd, his very Melody Nelson string arrangements and his way to ring loose, airy, as if two tunes scattered conversed in parallel (in the manner of the Beta Band). Future Anthem, you’ll see.

Roll on Live!

Transposed on scene, this album promises to be eventful. in particular it is hoped that string orchestra will be present. On the disc, the London Contemporary Orchestra is at work. Jointly founded in 2008 (four violins, four violas and chorus), heard alongside the guitarist and keyboardist Johnny Greenwood for the soundtrack of the film “The Master” by Paul Thomas Anderson (music director of “Daydreaming”). Response at the kickoff of the tour on 21 May in Amsterdam and especially the 23 and 24 May at the Zenith in Paris and the Fourvière Nights 1 st June Another unknown remains: what the hell does it mean “A Moon Shaped Pool” (a moon shaped pool)? With this album, treasure hunt is just beginning.
