Radiohead, a bright back – Télérama.fr

The long-awaited ninth album of Radiohead, “A Moon Shaped Pool” is finally available. A great year confirming that remains, more than ever, by its uniqueness and artistic integrity, a separate group.

Finally, after a carefully maintained suspense, Radiohead has ended earlier than planned to make us dally. A few days after laché the exciting (and quickly addictive) Burn the Witch , the group proposed another title, Daydreaming , long and captivating streamlined complaint, the mineral piano, that beautifully bears his name. Hardly time to get familiar with the second novelty, the full album, which is not expected before June, was made public Sunday, May 8 at night. To believe that Thom Yorke and his cohorts could no longer keep them for their best argument, artistic, they are not evidence doubted the value. Well Named. A Moon Shaped Pool is a record which they can be proud of, a work that recalls masterfully Radiohead exception, such a popular and demanding group, if it has mastered its communication and marketing , did so at the service of his integrity, autonomy and creativity constantly questioned.

the Oxford quintet, quite unique in the musical landscape for twenty five years , definitely fits in the tradition of British designers and settlers, between pop and progressive, which preceded such Pink Floyd, Kate Bush and the Cure. With, for now, still no sign of abating. However, after the uneven King of Limbs in 2011, more than enriched album torn by the various desires of musicians whose solo activities were witnesses – electro-minimalist expérimentalo Albums Yorke, the BO or exotic collaborations Jonny Greenwood, the intimate folk trials … Philip Selway – were beginning to wonder if the group entity was not irretrievably undermined. A Moon Shaped Pool is the vivid demonstration of the opposite.

Clear and reachable

Rarely album “difficult” will not have seemed so clear and accessible. Difficult, because once more Radiohead no rules, refrains from any recipe established, offers no potential hit to the more or less proven classic. But apart from their original Creep, the almost unexpected success of Karma Police Lotus Flower , that did he not always been the case? And if Burn the Witch , title, although atypical, is by far the most rock of all, it does not use it less perfect introduction to the suite, the languid tempo significantly . A disc where you can expect anything, except to be deliberately confused or disturbed as was often the case previously. For if the ingredients, textures and instrumentation change with the eleven tracks, climate, tone and purpose unite harmoniously. There is first the voice of Yorke, so recognizable, often on the verge of caricature his rattle but never sink to it, which, on several occasions, never even looked so radiant. And, suddenly, shocking. Including Present Tense , the rhythm almost bossa of the third kind, the short and silkily orchestrated Glass Eyes on True Love Waits , sumptuous ballad biding his time since 1995 that closes all and especially the prodigious Identikit, heart of an album that seems, after three or four plays, will be a fraction of its resources.

indolent rhythm of drums, guitar and little hesitant said singing

Identikit summarizes the appeal of A Moon Shaped Pool . A title that starts smoothly, on an indolent but persistent pace battery, a guitar hesitant following some said singing striving to keep a fragile melody of all beauty. Gradually, the intensity rises, the voice comes out of his reserve, is its clarity, as stimulated by a chorus that unfolds before pressing background singer who repeats that he wants nothing ( “I do not want to know” ). Rest guitar to take the piece to its conclusion with a fascinating solo, amazing string of notes to his doctored. A temptation of a certain coldness or electronic austerity, Thom Yorke and Radiohead preferred retourver the organic warmth of acoustic textures and string orchestrations (London Contempory Orchestra) that highlight the findings and contributions of the musicians again accomplices, each weaving its own melodic or rhythmic way without herring.

After Six Demolition Project PJ Harvey and Hopelessness of Anohni, a Moon Shaped Pool is further proof that a work can also indignant activist and rhyme with finesse and beauty. Beauty, like the peace in a world increasingly alarming, would be accessible, as always worried Thom Yorke, only privileged who are ignoring reality. Therefore privileged appreciate the grace of folk Desert Island Disc, hoping that repeated listening of A Moon Shaped Pool will open a little, and even a lot, ears and eyes.
