Desert Trip : the festival of the century keeps its promises – The Parisian

Pdared in the middle of the desert, approximately 190 km from Los Angeles, Indio Empire Polo Club is a huge fault green, a sacred finger to the ecology. It is here that, each year, in April, the festival is held the most connected on the planet, Coachella, with so many celebrities in the crowd than on stage. A festival outside the norms, but which may not compete with the new madness that has invented the Americans : “Desert Trip”, the journey in the desert and what a trip ! The concert of the century, or rather the festival of the century, who meet during two weekends and six legends of rock, two per evening. With, in order of appearance, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, the Who and Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd. Suffice to say the history of pop and rock music, our history since the 60s, over two billion records sold combined.

399 € 1 599 € the pass for three days. The first round is held from Friday evening until Sunday evening, the second will take place the next weekend. This is a first and probably a last. Them six, the headliners account for 724 years, which makes an average age of 72 years. It is for this reason that the 75 000 tickets per evening will be sold out in the world in five hours. Despite the high price, of 399 € 1 599 € the pass for three days. “This has no price, it is a moment of grace, of pure magic,” enthused Philippe Manoeuvre, the cross-Friday at Desert Trip. The editor-in-chief of “Rock’n Folk” could not miss this moment in history. He came with his eldest daughter, Manon, 27, who lives in Los Angeles.” It is fabulous to share this moment of history together. We had not seen a poster like this since Woodstock. And it’s even better, since Stones, Dylan and the Beatles had not wanted to play it. And he was never seen again.”

Access to the boxes by elevator to the super-VIP. “Desert Trip” is far from the spirit of Woodstock. What a contrast between the paths that lead to the festival, where the burning heat and the dust oblige the workers to wear masks. And the greenery, the calm that prevailed once passed the security screening and search surprisingly flexible. And what luxury ! Like Coachella, facilities and services are very high-end. In the VIP zone, located in the garden of the polo club, you can drink for 500 € three days in a coconut shell engraved with the logo “Desert Trip”, try thirty different beers in walking between a solid mass of roses and a fountain overflowing with water… In the middle of the desert. For the common fans, everything is expensive, the T-shirts and posters to remember are 40 €. Everything is separated by gates and barriers. Most of the festival goers are seated in the pit and the stands. For the super guests, who have broken their piggy bank, access to dressing rooms is via lifts.

Of the ancients that still amaze. The american dream has a price. And these papys du rock are still dreaming of the crowds. The Rolling Stones still amaze by recording in London in three days is an album of covers of blues, as well as to their beginnings. Sir McCartney gives concerts marathon of three hours, Neil Young sings of the fire-ship against the american multinationals, Monsanto and Starbucks Coffee, Who impress on stage by their fire power, Bob Dylan started a tour without end and does not hesitate to go and visit festivals in france as “Break Guitar” or “Poupet”, Roger Waters criticizes Donald Trump, and performs with “The Wall” is one of the most beautiful and lucrative tours of stadiums ever made.

Dylan électrise the classics. Under the blazing sun of california, for the past two days, they are bluffing once again. The stage is huge, the video screens of a size rarely seen in a festival, the sound is clear and powerful. Friday night, Dylan sings with a voice and an involvement, which have often been lacking. And even if it does not address a word to the public – as usual – nor shows his face on the big screen, he deigns to play his classics and give them a electric treatment. It must be said that all the world is waiting for the Stones ! There are thousands of t-shirts with their likeness in the crowd. And the Stones are waiting for you ! It is a part of the fun of more than two hours, with fireworks in the grand finale on “I can’t Get No Satisfaction.”

When the Stones resumed the Beatles. History, then again, the Stones are for the first time “Come Together” in tribute to “a small unknown group,” jokes Mick Jagger. The Beatles, so often presented wrongly as their best of enemies ! Paul McCartney playing the next day, we started to dream that he join him on stage, even if “Come Together” is a title of John Lennon. But surprise, surprise is also amazing. We can see that McCartney is right behind us in the bleachers, dancing and singing as a kid with his wife on “Miss You” and “Sympathy For The Devil” !

Neil Young wins the crowd. on Saturday night, Neil Young is all its promises. It begins with 20 minutes of delay, but offers fifteen minutes of bonus to the fans electrified. He who can, sometimes, go to a concert without releasing a word, joke several times – bouncing on the position of Roger Waters in Rio against Donald Trump – and loose solos guitar absolutely insane, especially on a version of 25 minutes of “Down By The River” to spend chills. Worn by his young band, Promise Of The Real, it takes away the mob, who ends up standing, arms raised to the sky during the final hymn “Keep on Rockin’ In A Free World”.

McCartney was the pressure. at the time these lines are written, it is 22 hours on Saturday in California – 7 hours on Sunday in France – and Paul McCartney has spent only a quarter of an hour on stage that he has already put the whole world in his jacket pocket to col Mao. It starts on the hats of wheel with an introduction to dream, “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Jet” and “Can’t Buy Me Love”, which makes up and dance the 75 000 spectators. “It is also a dream for me to be here, he was impressed by the crowd. I think we will spend a good evening”. No one suspected it. Even less so when he invited Neil Young to join him on stage to play together “day in a life” by the Beatles, “Give Peace A Chance” the Plastic Ono Band and “Why don’t we do it on the road” also by the Beatles. Another historic moment…
