The sinking of the Titanic : and if the iceberg wasn’t the only one responsible ? – Franceinfo

The iceberg that sunk the Titanic in 1912 may not be the only one responsible for the disaster. According to the documentary Titanic : The new evidence, which aired on January 1, 2017 on the uk channel Channel 4, and that franceinfo viewed, a fire would have also weakened the hull of the boat.

In the documentary, the journalist irish Senan Molony is based on a photo album created by one of the engineers who participated in the construction of the vessel. The shots, taken before the departure of the Titanic, found a significant black mark on one side of the hull. It would correspond to the hole formed by the collision with the iceberg. For the journalist, these photos gave credence to the thesis of a weakness of the boat to that exact location.

This is the coal stored in the ship that may be in part responsible for the sinking. According to the historians that Senan Molony has submitted these images, the stock was at the level of the black spot, visible on the radiograph. It would have caught fire even before the start of Belfast. At the time, the company had understated the facts. But this type of fire can smolder for several weeks and temperatures reaching a thousand degrees. Such a scenario has been able to considerably weaken the hull of the Titanic, ” explains one expert, interviewed in the documentary.

Difficult to grasp this mystery, given the degradation of the wreck, which lies in the Atlantic ocean for more than a century. The Titanic departed Southampton on 10 April 1912 with 2,200 passengers on board. Collided with an iceberg in the night of 14 to 15 April 1912, il has never reached New York, its final destination. The sinking lasted less than three hours and made about 1 500 people dead.
