Since the announcement of the opening film, we suspected that the 68th Cannes Film Festival is not quite like the last. High Head, a French writer of drama to launch the festivities, rather than an American blockbuster type Mad Max (relegated to the day after the opening)? That gave the tone from the outset. This year’s Cannes Film Festival plays the Patriots.
Of the sixteen films in competition to date (the list is to be completed in the coming weeks), four are French. Three years after Rust and Bone , six after A Prophet , Jacques Audiard returns to the Croisette with Dheepan , the story of a refugee Sri Lankan Tamil political in the Paris suburbs, inspired by Persian Letters Montesquieu. “This is a film without stars, a film about the state and deserted places of our Republic,” describes the General Delegate of the Festival, Thierry Fremaux.
French Parity
Never held so far in a big festival, Stéphane Brizé ( Mademoiselle Chambon few hours spring ) is invited by the front door with The Market Act third collaboration with actor Vincent Lindon who embodies this time a fifty which to exit unemployment becomes a security guard in a supermarket . Anecdote, Brizé chose to shoot his film revealing daily his script to the actors.
Two women complement this French quartet: Valérie Donzelli ( Declaration of War ), which will present Marguerite and Julien, incestuous romance in the time of Henry IV and Maïwenn who will try to do as well in 2011, where she had moved the Cannes jury with Poliss . The director of 39 years comes with a movie with the evocative title, My King , tumultuous love story between Emmanuelle Bercot and Vincent Cassel.
Post-attacks Climate
France will also be represented, out of competition, with I’m a soldier Laurent Lavière which c ‘ is the first feature film, and Maryland Alice Winocour already came to Cannes in 2012 with Augustine, presented in Critics’ Week. To this list filmmakers obviously adds a list of well-nourished actors, where there are particular Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve, Benoît Magimel and Louis Garrel.
“It’s a beautiful French Year” comments Thierry Fremaux ensuring he could select three other local films if they had been finished on time, and excludes no still select one in the coming days (much talk of Arnaud Desplechin …). The reasons for this patriotism? The Delegate General of the Cannes Film Festival does not hide have wished to build a selection able to resonate with the climate of post-bombings and France “to express confidence in French cinema in its successful model of support to creation. ”
