Marjane Satrapi: “I want to explore many different things” – Screenrush

After Persepolis and Chicken with Plums, Marjane Satrapi is tested with the horror comedy with The Voices, led by Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, an irreverent cat and a dog gentillet. Screenrush met with the filmmaker.

Screenrush: How would you summarize the plot without giving too much away?

Marjane Satrapi, director: I would say this is the story of a nice guy who tries to do his best to part of society, and at the same time, it is a bit crazy so he hears voices. He speaks with his dog and his cat. One evening, unfortunately, by a combination of circumstances, he kills his colleague he loves, and from that time is the snowball effect. With an irreverent cat and a dog gentillet.

This is a film that is very difficult to qualify. I’m not saying that to give me a kind. You can say that it’s a comedy, yes, but not that. You can say it’s a horror movie, yes, but not that. It really is transgender, and that’s what I liked when I was offered to do the project.

For the first time, you stage a scenario in which you are not the author. The Voices The scenario was on the famous “black list”, ie scenarios considered impossible to adapt …

No, the black list, these are movies not impossible to adapt. These are the best scenarios, but who can not find enough money to be made. This scenario, as it is somewhat immoral and irreverent, you can not do it with a lot of money. Nobody wants to put a lot of money in a movie like this. The film should have been there 5-6 years by Ben Stiller, and then it did not. Finally, it was me who did it, with Ryan Reynolds!

Is that in the end the project was complicated to finance?

All I do is always very difficult to finance. When you make things easier to finance, they are romantic comedies, movies like that … but these are not the things that really interest me. When you do things a little different, it becomes more difficult to finance course.

Ryan Reynolds Interview

There are a true aesthetic that emerges from the film, with a strong graphic universe …

What makes me happy is that people tell me: we see immediately that this is your movie. I just paint, so I have a special relationship with the context, color, and all that. I am a true esthete. I love the beauty

It happened to me many times to go see a movie and say,. The film was great, but my god it was ugly. There are films that are ugly! I love beauty. Here, this scenario was offering me more opportunity to create the fantasy world of Jerry

It should always be something that is fantastic, but we can justify pragmatically. For example, these pink overalls, you can say that this is the extraordinary vision of Jerry. But you can also say that it is a small town in Michigan where everyone is gone, and so this small business tubs that rest, the Director of Human Resources has said it will give them roses combinations like this , it will give them pep to work. So you can justify it. As they do bathtubs, it’s normal that they are dressed in pink. After my rose is a little more flashy. It took overalls send to Germany to find exactly that tone of pink.

When I make a movie, I have a color booklet. I do not like having all the colors. For me, a film must have an identity. Colors, parallel lines, symmetries, these are obsessions you when you come in drawing and painting. These things you feel in the film, because I work like that.

Marjane Satrapi Interview

What are your plans?

I started working on two new films. An American and a French, but in English. I work on both; it will be seen that fund first.

I am 44 years old. As I’m a heavy smoker, remaining optimistic, I will work another 30 years. I can make a film every two years, working quickly, so I still have 15 films to do. Each film is about 7% of my life. This is huge! So I want to do all the movies that I could do, except for the romantic comedy, because I do not support that!

I’d like to do a musical, a war movie … J ‘I want to explore many different things, but I would not plan it. If I know what I’ll do before I die, my life would be super boring! I hope it will happen extraordinary things, like this film that I just did. I never expected to do this
