Leopardi. Il Giovane Favoloso – Les Echos

Leopardi. Il Giovane Favoloso (Mario Martone with Elio Germano, Michele Riondino, Anna Mouglalis. 2 h 15).

A round the body, Mario Martone seizes life Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). The film follows the trace of his childhood cloistered in the family library to its rise in the Florentine and Neapolitan literary society, which will eventually reject it. A life that is also an agony since Leorpardi suffering from a terrible disease. Martone prefers not to dwell on the political and historical context. His film becomes excessively obscure. It is by no means an introduction for those who know nothing of the work of Leopardi and XIX th century Italy. It is even often difficult to follow. The impressive performance of Elio Germano nevertheless made “Leopardi” a strong work on the disease and pain. Full of life and fury, the hero inevitably curls. There is something fascinating in the spectacle of this silhouette that twists like a pine needle in the flame. It is especially poignant to see a spirit flourish in a body that is crumbling. As if the creation was a long struggle against oneself.
