The British author Terry Pratchett has died at the age of 66 years, announced his editor. He wrote nearly seventy books, including the hit series Discworld Annals .
Suffering from a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease, Terry Pratchett had fought in recent years in a number of associations for the right to die. It is “ dead at his home, her cat asleep on his bed, surrounded by his family ,” wrote the editor in a statement.
Terry Pratchett gave recent years several conferences on the right to euthanasia and participated in a series of BBC programs on the subject, including accompanying several people in Switzerland who wanted to die. He had discovered in 2007 that he was suffering from posterior cortical atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure. He then decided to do what he called a “coming out” – publicly reveal his illness – in order to raise public awareness. After starting his career as a journalist for a local newspaper, Terry Pratchett worked several years as head of communications for a nuclear power plant. Passionate words, dictionaries, encyclopedias and writing, this admirer of Tolkien – he had discovered almost by chance very young – have been linguist. He is also the author of several novels outside of this universe, including Nation , a tribute to Lord of the Flies , which he considered his most accomplished work. He also collaborated with his close friend Neil Gaiman to write The good omens , a novel about the adventures of an angel and a demon living on Earth and happy alliance to defeat the the Apocalypse.
His latest book, A Slip of the Keyboard (not yet translated into French) brings together a large number of speeches, articles and texts on topics ranging from protection orangutans to the press, through his own illness.
