“The Voices” is the new film by Marjane Satrapi and we him far away from “Persepolis” in the strange world of a man who has murderous impulses encouraged by … his cat.
Like many people of taste, I loved it Persepolis , the film event Marjane Satrapi adapted her autobiographical comics. It is with enthusiasm that I had booked a seat for a screening of The Voices , her new film, which is expected to be very different from the first …
Oh boy . Different, yes, we can say! And strangely enjoyable. Like his hero, The Voices has two facets and you never quite know whether to laugh or bite the bullet. Back on a film like no other.
The Voices that whisper bad things
Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is a good guy in all respects. A bit naive but basically nice , it goes good days in his company where he bundles and sends baths, all happy in her pretty pink uniform. It does not really friend • e • s, but it has its colleagues and made eyes Fiona (Gemma Arterton), sublime book that he would like to know … more intimately.
When he comes home from work, our hero talks to his animals Bosco, the good-natured dog, and Mr. Whiskers, the deceitful cat. Well, lots of people do that … But no hear their four-legged answer them as Jerry. Is that it has a little messed up with drugs, and is not entirely honest with his psychiatrist. Under the influence of Mr Whiskers, it starts making funny stuff, like killing young women at the heart of the night with a knife and keep their head in the fridge.
You go on lollipop Jerry.
Between laugh and thrill, The Voices scale
Just like Jerry hides a taste for the massacre in her pretty smile, The Voices stash behind the unreal and comical scenes of brutal violence and graphics . Nothing stopping to sleep, that said, as the slick appearance, colorful and cheerful film is in contrast to the horror gore that unfolds when his hero farts a cable.
One can not help but feel sympathy for Jerry frank: his mental illness was not her fault, and the little voice that, for him, emanate from his pets are a little his only friends … but he chooses not to take his medication, and when he sees the world and its actions without any “filter” is cowardice that drives him to take refuge in his folly not to confront the crimes he committed.
“overlay” comic film therefore echoing madness Jerry : when he smiles, exchanging passes with his victims and moments full of tenderness with their decapitated heads, the atmosphere is cheerful, good-almost! But in the rare moments when he understands the seriousness of his actions, the color palette is dull, the light downward, and the horror is revealed.
Ryan Reynolds, the true revelation of The Voices
I’ve never been a big fan of Ryan Reynolds (who will play the popular Deadpool soon). I considered him a somewhat mediocre actor subscriber romantic comedy dork, and it’s not very fair Green Lantern that had made me change my mind …
But it’s great to The Voices ! Of course, the rest of the cast (Gemma Arterton and Anna Kendrick in mind) is good, but Ryan Reynolds is truly bringing the movie .
It happens to make Jerry turns touching and disturbing, meek and murderer. The hero is so simple that one wonders at the beginning if it is not suffering from a mild mental retardation; it is misplaced, affectionate, always seems to apologize … Even when busy killing someone.
I also extend a big big up to ‘s team that has managed to play a cat and a dog: well no, it’s not the synthetic image (as I mentioned in the beginning but we will say that you have not seen) And the choice of a British accent (I would say Scottish, but I’m not an expert) for the vulgar and insulting Mr Whiskers is particularly well chosen: it quickly became my favorite character …
Then I’ll see The Voices
Yes.
Because it’s a real UFO film that changes dork comedies and horror movies scary. Because it’s a nice performance as an actor. Because it’s both funny and terrible. Because it’s really good shot (Marjane Satrapi congratulations!) And rhythmic.
And hey, there is a cat and a dog SPEAK! It’s still cool, right
