“True Detective” Season 2: an almost general failure – Télérama.fr

The second part of the HBO anthology ended Sunday in the United States. Monday, August 10 and in France on OCS City. Our decryption with spoilers

The miracle did not occurred. Too much awaited too eager to excel, Season 2 of True Detective has disappointed on almost all the way. It multiplied the tape, the clumsiness, the arts, lengths. If it had been his season 1 for us to hope, if there had been casting his seller, if there had been licked his package – and always sublime generic rare renewed satisfaction – not perhaps have not made the effort to go after eight episodes. The last episode, unnecessarily lengthened (1:30, one hour against the other seven), regularly grotesque, poorly incarnated perfectly illustrates its many weaknesses. What happened to you is not in the least moved the world to see their heroes fall one by one? For the scenes, stretched, seem so heavy? No doubt was there in the original intentions of NIC PIZZOLATTO a desire to play on artifice, empty soul of a Los Angeles, that of cosmetic surgery, vulgar luxury, pornography. But was there any question that everything in this season 2, sounds so false? The actors are capable of being good – Rachel McAdams is doing all season, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn Taylor Kitsch and an episode two – never connect, their dialogues ring hollow? How to explain this plot, which wanted nocturnal, sticky, hot and dirty, seemed remote, mechanical, disembodied.



unnecessarily confused

The history Velcoro Ray (Farrell) and his son? Already seen and clumsy. The relationship annoyed Semyon Frank (Vaughn) and his wife Jordan (Kelly Reilly)? Poor emotions. The torments of Paul Woodrugh (Kitsch)? Too treated superficially. Never, in eight hours and a half, we have not been affected. We have never been surprised, disturbed, stirred. We never wanted to come back, listen to a replica or even find a clue. The story, unnecessarily confusing, responsible stakeholders and weak twists – just the end of episode 2 we she has left stunned – there is probably something, but it does not explain everything: it which made the True Detective force last year, it was not suspense, but its atmosphere and characters, their incarnation, their complex humanity, their private sorrows.

Ordered to deliver a season in year 2, NIC PIZZOLATTO a-t -it panicked? Is it stood still facing the blank page before imagined, lack of a better story? Is it possible for one man to face such a challenge, even though he was assisted by Scott Lasser two episodes? Cary Fukunaga, director of single season 1, held a real aesthetic coherence, was the universe, gave body to the imagination of the writer. The six stage directors who have succeeded at the head of this season 2 have not pinpointed yet the fascinating world that presented itself to them, a familiar and strange at once industrial décor, a monstrous basin to the immense metaphorical potential. Their pretty Plans highways, concreted son of immense urban fabric, are doing nothing. The architecture of Vinci, degenerate city never embedded in our pupils as nature of Louisiana in season 1.



Heaviness and failures

Select the anthology, have the courage to start anew, to dare the city no longer be in the same strange, short, change, ambition was beautiful. It is to be welcomed, but it was unsuccessful. There would here or there of James Ellroy, we see David Lynch, but what? What should be eerie (the family of Mayor Chessani, gangsters) is too often grotesque. The pieces do not fit. We move from one scene to another without flexibility, as before a bad copy of a film genre – and that whatever science classics Pizzolatto. Undoubtedly stiffness comedians, the nullity of certain lines (messages left by his son Ray …), the failed death of his heroes (who seems to have a goal, make beautiful plans and show us as the California can be pretty far from towns), probably all these burdens and failures they hiding Pizzolatto a demonic plan, a great inspiration that only a handful of scholars perceive bitter. But as we were not of those who outweighed obscure theories year, we are hardly in the mood to search the bowels of this season 2 True Detective to be find something to temper our disappointment.

The central themes of paternity was not without interest. But the painful relationship between children and parents, too, heavily treated with blows of “coincidences” too many – all the characters have the same concerns, declined differently, and the detective story also refers to their torments – and with a pathos crushing, permanent exaggeration that prevents identify with the characters. Maybe it was not such a good idea to make more main characters … Should we have more time NIC PIZZOLATTO to give their flesh? As the “reboot” episode 5 suggests, this season 2 looks like an industrial semi-failure. As if we stood a good idea, a real good series, good characters, but we never managed to put them in a satisfactory manner movement. As if the story had escaped its author. As if he had written a screenplay draft without being able to go back and improve it. As if he had to run, do the best, accept second best.

There are very few moments in saving: the shooting of the end episode 4, leaving hope – finally – a revival. The episode 7, by far the most successful rhythmic, dense, efficient. Perhaps the orgy of episode 6. In the limit false cliffhanger end of episode 2. Until the last moment, it was thought that True Detective could get by. That too often felt boredom would be redeemed through a glorious exit. Yet tragic desired, the fall season has unfortunately not led to any goose bumps. Frank and Ray outgrow it without much effort the Russians in a mechanical pigeon shooting and without scale, before being stupidly kill the both of them – the blow of Frank’s suit is a joke, and, in the hunt for Ray, there’s save that the failure of sending his final message to his son. Of course, it is reasonable to consider that this is suicide. But that does not excuse the weakness of their execution, the look of Ray to the treetops to the slow march of Frank interrupted by his memories. Not talking about the ultimate stage and his merry Latin American caricature loaded in swaying dances and virgins …

Are we missed something? True Detective season 2 Was a deliberately sluggish thinking on the genre of thriller and figures, a subtle caricature? Do we understand later that everything we call failures, heaviness and fireworks were actually the workings of a groundbreaking work, like these songs which tear our eardrums but, at the thirty-second listen, become suddenly sublime? Meanwhile, the disappointment is huge. Hopefully HBO, which still has good reason to renew the series – hearings held out – leaves NIC PIZZOLATTO time to turn the corner; to imagine a new original story; to choose new actors; and, above all, to better choose his stage directors – one is entitled to doubt the quality of here directing actors. Season 2 call this a false step. And hope the third, if it goes ahead, will save the aura of genius series NIC PIZZOLATTO
