Mia Madre de Nanni Moretti: when the mother withdraws … – Le Figaro

INTERVIEW – In his new film, the Italian director recounts with tender irony torment of a sister and brother face the disappearance of a loved one. A great movie, modest and staff.

The iconoclastic Nanni Moretti is basically a man like any other. The loss of her mother makes the inconsolable. The death of his mother occurred in October 2010, when he worked the assembly of ‘We Have a Pope . He knew immediately that Mia madre would be his next film.

LE FIGARO. – You play Giovanni, brother of Margherita. A man appeased, reassuring. We are far from your tormented characters. Would you have cared for your neuroses?

Nanni Moretti. – I do not know what you can change after the age of 3 years. I think very little. Giovanni is the brother which Margherita would look like. Like me, but I’m a lot more like Margherita.

Margherita is an authoritarian director, impatient. You did it look like?

Yes, his way of doing corresponds to mine on a platter. For example, the scene of the car, where Margherita is irritated against itself and against others, her screams are familiar to me.

Mia madre is, it a tribute to your mother?

A tribute, I do not know. The starting point is autobiographical, of course. My mother taught Latin and Greek as the character of the film. His last word, “Tomorrow” also like him a lot. She had that positive character. I stole some fragments the reality, since I read the newspaper I was writing at the time of the death of my mother. Tell the story allows me to maintain my relationship with her, to continue to make it live.
