the Angoulême festival continues to be under fire from critics. After the controversy over the initial absence of women among the appointed Grand Prix 2016, it was the turn of comic publishers threatened to boycott the next edition if a “radical overhaul” of the event is “not implemented as soon as possible.”
“The festival should be rethought in depth, in its structure, its governance, strategy, project, and ambitions,” say the 41 publishers belonging to the National Union publishing (Casterman, Dargaud, Delcourt, Denoël, …) and the Union of alternative publishers (SEA) (Anathema, Arbitrary, the Association, It & amp; There, The Coffee, The Cherry, The 5th layer).
Publishers want a mediator
“As a result of the absence of both of a shared vision and effective governance, the latest edition of the festival has accumulated the mistakes, “continued publishers. They point to the “absence of women in the list of eligible authors at the Grand Prix of the city of Angouleme, the discontent of writers often badly treated by the organization, the drop in attendance, opacity in the selections prices, the disastrous closing ceremony. ” The ceremony January 30 had indeed been marked by the announcement of a false track record that was very badly with the artists present. The presenter Richard Gaitet evening had later apologized for the hoax.
“You can not let it deteriorate and thus tarnish the image of the 9th Art in France and abroad “say the editors. They ask the Minister of Culture, Audrey Azoulay, receive “and to appoint a mediator to carry out urgently, this radical reform.” Created in 1973, Angoulême is the first festival dedicated to comics in Europe with an average attendance of 200 000 people each year
