You are about to go to the cinema to see “Rogue One” and you’re not quite sure what you are talking about ? Here is a small briefing which will help you enjoy the new Star Wars in the best conditions…
This article does not address :
- for fans of the first hour who have already taken the time to remater the 7 episodes of the Star Wars saga as well as the series Star Wars Rebels in its entirety in anticipation of the December 14, (that is to say, today), date as they are waiting frantically since a whole year and whose box is barbouillée of red on their calendar
- to those who know the difference between a rancor and a jawa, spelling, exact through some (three, please !) and their own rate of midichloriens
- to those who have already reserved their ticket for a very, very long time
On the other hand, it is aimed at :
- to those who have never understood anything about the Star Wars universe, who have seen a film or two a few years ago but do not remember it very well, and that one is about to drag to the cinema willingly or unwillingly
- to those who, only yesterday, thought the Rogue One, it was in fact the episode VIII of the saga. The result of the Awakening of the Force, what is it… yeah, it would be logical, no ?
- to those who, one day, have sincerely loved Star Wars, but who are not really sure of very well understand what is really Rogue One, and that does cracheraient not on a small point
first of All, here is a small summary of the chronology of Star Wars in the cinema…
episodes IV, V and VI
recorded between 1977 and 1983, A New hope, The Empire strikes back and Return of The Jedi are the Star Wars trilogy original. They tell stories of how Luke Skywalker learns to become a Jedi (knight able to master the Force and is supposed to ensure peace in the galaxy). He fights alongside Rebels against his father, Darth Vader, an adept of the Dark Side of the Force. This last, in the pay of the Emperor, reigns terror over the entire galaxy, thanks to the Death Star, a secret base the size of a moon capable of destroying any other planet. The trilogy ends with the destruction of this base and by the death of Vader.
episodes I, II and III
George Lucas went on to make The phantom Menace, Attack of The clones and Revenge of The Sith between 1999 and 2005. These three films, which constitute the prélogie Star Wars, explore mainly the past of Darth Vader, formerly Anakin Skywalker, and tell stories of how he has abandoned his status as a Jedi to go the Dark Side and join the Emperor. Episode III ends with the construction of the Death Star.
episode VII
30 years after the end of the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker has disappeared and the galaxy is once more under the yoke of the First Order, who has taken over the Empire and has a new base at the destructive power. Kylo Ren, the little son of Vader, has replaced it. During this time, Rey, a young girl of unknown origins, realizes that she is able to master the Force.
And suddenly, Rogue One, this is happening when ?
Between the prélogie and the original trilogy, that is to say several years after that, Vader took power in the galaxy, while the construction of the Death Star is about to be completed, and just before A new hope.
This is the first “Star Wars Story”, a film unit which is not part of any trilogy, but that mission is of the supplement focusing on events annexes to the episodes that we know. In this case, Rogue One allows you to answer a major question : how the Rebels managed to steal plans to the Death Star that allowed them to destroy it ?

to (re)see other movies to understand “Rogue One” ?
To have all the necessary items and take advantage of Rogue One in the best of conditions, let’s be honest, this article cannot replace a small catch-up of old movies. Not necessarily all, don’t worry…
If ever you run out of time and that you can (re)see one of the 7 episodes of Star Wars before the Rogue One, choose without hesitate A new hope, THE Star Wars original.
At the beginning of the film, princess Leia (sister of Luke Skywalker) inserts a secret document inside of a small droid (R2-D2) just before Vader does their ship in search of the data in question. “Where are the plans coded that you have intercepted ?,” asked the lord Vader by strangling a Rebel soldier.
By “you”, it refers to the small group led by Cassian Andor who comes to steal the plans of the Death Star, the Empire, and which is therefore called… Rogue One.
To put things even more clearly, just take the summary instituting A new hope, that explains black on white (or rather yellow on black) what happened in Rogue One :
“This is a time of civil war. Has space ships, operating from a base hidden, the Rebels have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, spies, Rebels have managed to steal secret plans to the ultimate weapon of the Empire : the Death Star (…).”
After having been stolen by the heroes of Rogue One, these plans are therefore carried by R2-D2, who escaped with his friend droid C-3PO on the planet Tatooïne. Its goal is to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, a former Jedi and friend of the Alliance, to transmit to him. It is during this quest that he met Luke Skywalker.
You really do not have the time to (re)see A new hope ? Your session starts in an hour ? Take at least 5 minutes for you rémémorer the scene we have been talking…
The heroine of the poster, who is it ?
as Embodied by Felicity Jones, the young Jyn Erso that you can see at the center of the poster of the film, there is a little doubt, an integral part of the team Rogue One who has managed to steal the plans of the Empire.
But beyond his courage and unwavering devotion to the cause for which it stands, are also her origins that make her a valuable part of the band, since it is none other than the daughter of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), the scientist hired by the Empire against her will to oversee the construction of the Death Star.
Here, you now have all the pieces needed to enjoy Rogue One. The rest of the events is to discover rooms. So good movie, and may the Force be with you !
