Orcs, dwarves, elves and men. This is the menu offered by Peter Jackson in French cinemas on December 10 to celebrate the end of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Ecu de Chêne in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies . A trilogy that complements, 13 years later, that of Lord of the Rings the same director. One of the many sagas (or “shuttered movies”) with great success.
For The Hobbit browses the Hunger Games , Divergent other Fast & amp; Furious that are jumping for joy the Web to each ad. But before it, many cults sagas were illustrated on the big screen. A windfall for productions that see themselves raise millions of dollars for each new fil m. And for good reason: we love sagas, we love to follow characters like Bilbo from year to year. And we even cry when they end.
But saga she really ends one day? Many never end! Fantasy, action, music, horror … Anything goes. No less than 24 James Bond 12 Star Trek 30 Godzilla (yes), 7 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 5 Alien 4 Indiana Jones 5 Resident Evil . A film club that brings in billions.
Ironically, and perhaps wisely, some productions have been very successful exploit the seam as long as there was one. Then they ended the adventure never to return (up to at least today), leaving fond memories to fans. Such was the case of Rocky since 2006, Back to the Future (1985-1990), Hannibal Lecter (1991 to 2007) and other Jaws (1975 to 1987).
However, some irreducible productions come back from the grave to haunt the poor fans to death with spin-off , reboot and 3D revolutionaries. Sweet promises which unfortunately quickly transformed into tears and disappointment. Thus one speaks again recently a spin-off of Harry Potter scheduled for 2016. But also Star Wars: Episode VII (Dec. 2015 ) Jason Bourne 5 (August 2015), Mission: Impossible 5 (December 2015), Jurassic World (June 2015), Mad Max: Fury Road (May 2015), or Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (July 2017). Maybe we should start considering retirement? It is said that, we said nothing
One thing is certain. Peter Jackson still has some way to go if it wants to catch up with the recipes of some sagas. In the first place, James Bond is positioned as the most profitable in the history of cinema (to Harry Potter and Star Wars ) with $ 14.6 billion in global revenues. Not bad for 40 years of British spy movies. And anyway, let’s be honest, there are some that we would like to see never fade and have yet many things to give, like the Hobbit precisely to Planet of the Apes , Avatar , Terminator (next installment due in July 2015) or franchises super- Marvel and DC heroes.
