INTERVIEW – After Sicario, and before Blade Runner 2049, the film maker, filming an encounter of the third type, which overcomes the clichés of the genre. For Le Figaro, he alludes to the complexity of the shoot, the challenge will be to create an alien ever seen in the cinema… and book a commentary on Blade Runner 2049.
The path film by quebec director Denis Villeneuve (49 years old) is like that of a rocket. After Fire (adapted from the play by Wajdi Mouawad), the thriller Prisoners, that is to Cannes in 2015, with the excellent Sicario, in competition, that it gets on orbit. First contact was shot in stride. Then, Villeneuve has followed up with the sequel to the legendary film by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner 2049 which should be out in October 2017. In the salons of the hotel Bristol, where he gives his interviews, he appears tired, but serene. It was just time to notice that he is wearing a large bandage on the right hand…
LE FIGARO. – How do you get past the thriller Sicario science fiction film First contact?
Denis VILLENEUVE. - In reality, the two films were in development simultaneously. It was like the movie twins who grew up together, one as the other could exist. After having crushed the black in the Fires, Prisoners, which helped me through Sicario, it is knowing that I enchaînerai First contact afterwards.
How have you avoided the big trap of this film, of showing an alien being different from all those already imagined by the film?
At first, I was expecting a fun party. I told myself that finally, I was going to be able to play with the science-fiction. In fact, I found it scary. The dream has quickly turned into a nightmare. It was a long work. I ended up finding a mexican artist who works in the United States, Carlos Fuente. He has also worked with Ridley Scott. I have chosen among many designers because it has great ability to create beings that have a presence. A lot of artists draw monsters. Me, I wanted an entity that has a presence. Like a horse or an elephant. an animal presence powerful, flirting almost with the grotesque, a form after an image nightmare now a fugitive of the subconscious, something that is beyond our imagination. This artist has opened to me a door to the surprise… I conceived of the film when referring to the movie jawsof Spielberg. It was necessary to keep the tension intact, each time you return to the ship, you discover something new. Finally, First Contact is a strip tease is very slow! (Laughter)
Your film, is it not more a film about communication, a blockbuster SF?
I believe, in fact. What interested me, it was to show the intuition as the engine of communication. By effect-mirror, the film is more interested in us humans than E. T. He criticizes our lack of humility, our violence, our inability to tame the other…
Why do you have a bandage at hand?
Ho! It?! It is an accident stupid end-of-shoot. (Laughter). I have finished the last shots of Blade Runner 2049, there are 24 hours. And it was an end-of-shooting spectacular! There was a feast of thunder. I wanted to crack the champagne and the bottle exploded in my hand. Hence the fact that I’m wearing a bandaged hand.
What can you tell me the movie?
Unfortunately, I was asked not to say anything…
Tell me at least if you are happy…
Yes, I’m happy!
