NEW YORK, May 1 (Reuters) – Ben E. King, famous American soul singer for her performance of the song “Stand by me”, died Thursday at the age of 76, his agent said Friday artistic, Phil Brown.
Known for his baritone voice, Ben E. King, born in North Carolina, started the group “The Five Crowns,” then renamed “The Drifters” before find more success in the stable of the record company Atlantic Records.
He himself co-wrote and sang the first major success of the group, “There goes my baby” in 1959 , according to its website.
A financial dispute led him to leave the band to embark on a solo career in 1960 and record a year later “Stand by me”, elected from among ” Songs of the Century “by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the American Federation of record companies.
