After a fifth season full of twists and revelations, Ian Beattie spoke about his character Meryn Trant, loyal guard of the King of King’s Landing. We met at the Carrousel du Louvre during the inauguration of the exhibition Game of Thrones.
How are you?
Okay, this is the first time I inaugurated an exhibition for the series, and do it at the Louvre it is a huge honor for Game of Thrones and for myself. It is the cultural center of the world, it’s fantastic to be here, I do not want to leave!
Have you ever seen the show before?
No, this is the first time I see her, I had just heard. And what I like about this show is that I am part of a plot of Game of Thrones in the kingdom of King’s Landing, so I never met the characters or the Wall ‘elsewhere. I’m glad to see some of the props and costumes from other intrigues always with the very notion of detail, which to me is participating in the show success. Its production is unmatched added value and the fans will love the show. For example, when I wear my armor as Ser Meryn Trant is difficult because it weighs 28 kilos but it helps me to get into my character of the king guard.
A the end of season 5, we learn that voting is pedophile character before he was assassinated. What was your reaction
Dave and Dan, the showrunners (note: writer-producers)?, Are great guys. They call you in person at the beginning of the season to bring you the news. All they told me is “ Before you go, we will have the opportunity to see a very wrong side of Ser Meryn and get a spectacular death “. So it suited me, plus I thought I was going to kill someone, why not Bronn, and then I read the script … I was horrified! As an actor, it was probably the biggest challenge of my career to embody this monster and make it intimate side. Every minute during the three months that separated me from shooting, I wondered how I would play those scenes. These three days of shooting were my best experience on a plateau with gambling problems and technical difficulties. Arya stabbed my eyes so I had to wear dentures, making me totally blind for 7 hours! It was so strange but it helped me bringing my character of vulnerability. My last scene I butchered was shot in one take, the director yelled “ Coupe! ” and it was the worst moment of my career. Luckily I had dentures because I burst into tears like every actor when he leaves the series. It’s like saying you you could not go back to your family. In addition, they rotate the sixth season in Belfast in Northern Ireland at the moment, where I live! It’s horrible.
What is your best memory during those five years?
Each of the moments I spent were always good or funny I have no better or worst memory. Yes ! At trial Tyrion in the fourth season, I had to testify against him on the first day of the four days of filming. With 500 extras behind me, a technical team of 250 people in front and main characters of the series on the set. I have not managed to bring one word. I told the director, in three days I will know that text in 90 years I will remember this text and it’s true because I could recite even you now!
When Arya put you on his enemies list, you really thought she would eventually kill you?
Yes. At first I was supposed to die in the battle of Blackwater in season 2 but they finally decided to keep me and there I knew it would be that Arya would kill me. I was certain it had to happen, it was so despicable that I would not have let his life more than a week if it was attacking my children. And I can not wait to see what will happen to Arya in Season 6 because it was far away and there is great concern for her.
Early in the series, did you expect such a success?
No, everybody knew we had a good series, but no one suspected that success. I explain by actors who are incredibly talented, even children. The creators of the series are very brave for taking the risk of killing Ned Stark at the end of the first season and each actor is for his role, we can not imagine better for each character. I also knew that the series had this quality of always surprise us. We are entering a golden age for television with new platforms and including Game of Thrones has set the bar high and offers a quality that others will be very difficult to match.
Who would you like to see on the throne of iron?
I do not know but I would be very disappointed if Tyrion and Varys are not here for or advise, as these are the good characters who want Westeros and its people are well, who have a sense of justice. I’d like to see Davos as well. Even if they do not sit on it, I’d like to see them behind.
What other character would you have liked to play?
N ‘ any character. Besides I had auditioned for another character, I had not been caught and I was furious. A few weeks later they called me to offer me the role of Ser Mery and I was very grateful especially since it’s a character that has many facets. Especially that I had to play the right arm of Ned Stark who dies on the fifth episode, so I was very lucky to be there for five years.
Do you have a message to convey to fans?
Thanks to them, I love the fans because they immerse themselves completely in the characters can love them or hate them but know when to detach we meet. They are very generous over the world and I love meet to exchange theories on the future of the characters, because I am so much ignorance than they do on this point. That’s the only positive thing since I am no longer in the series! I can not wait to see the next season.
