Jean-Marc Bustamante, an artist to direct the Fine Arts – Le Figaro

After the controversy surrounding the dismissal of Nicolas Bourriaud this summer, the Ministry of Culture has decided to appoint a photographer, painter and sculptor considered in the world of art.

The Department of Culture and Communication wants to “put the artist at the heart of the school project.” Appointing a painter, sculptor and photographer at the head of Fine Arts, the Culture Minister Fleur Pellerin selects an artist to take over the directorship of the prestigious school. The Fine Arts since 2011 were directed by critic and art historian, Nicolas Bourriaud.

Jean-Marc Bustamante, Toulouse artist was already professor at the Fine Arts since 1998, and to the Akademie der Künste in Munich Bildenden and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Eight candidates had proposed their project to the selection committee, including Éric de Chassey, director of the Villa Medici in Rome. This also seemed best placed to succeed Nicolas Bourriaud.

Choosing a recognized artist, representative of France at the Venice Biennale in 2003, should satisfy students and the world of art. This summer, the announcement of the dismissal of Nicolas Bourriaud had sparked controversy Quai Malaquais.
