“2017, finally the end of the tunnel”, as Charlie Hebdo – Maritima.info

Manaus (Brazil) (AFP)

The brazilian authorities were looking Tuesday, dozens of inmates escaped from two jails in Manaus (north) in the aftermath of the mutiny which resulted in 56 dead, a massacre of extreme violence that would have been motivated by a “revenge” between rival gangs.

According to the latest information of security services of the State of Amazonia, 54 of the 184 inmates who fled the area have already taken over.

An important feature of research has been put in place to find the 130 fugitives still on the run, with the blocking of the main access to the prisons.

“We have already captured 54 fugitives, and police officers in the rest were recalled, and we get new information at every moment. We hope all recover by the end of the week so that everything returns to normal”, said Tuesday afternoon José Fontes, secretary of the State of Amazonia to the public Safety, at a press conference.

An engagement whose effectiveness has been questioned by a photo published on Facebook by an internet user posing as one of the fugitives, with more than 14,000 “likes”, but his identity has not been confirmed officially.

“I’m coming, attention singles,” he writes in one of the photos.

The echoes of the massacre spread like wildfire in other prison establishments in the region, with the beginnings of mutiny, since controlled, in two of them.

moreover, four inmates died in a correctional Unit Puraquequara, other prison amazon, but the security services told the AFP that this was an incident “isolated” due to a brawl between the inmates.

- the Anguish of the families -

The massacre of Manaus is the most bloody in 25 years in a prison in brazil, from Carandiru, where the intervention of the police had 111 people dead in 1992.

The balance sheet is extremely heavy with scenes of carnage unsustainable: many inmates have been beheaded, and piles of headless bodies have been found on site.

The state of the body complicates the identification of victims, an event for families. Dozens of people are gathered since Monday in front of the medico-legal institute (IML) in the waiting for information.

“I just want news of my son, dead or alive. At the prison, they do not give any information. I don’t know where he is, if he escaped… everyone is in anxiety,” says Ana Regina, a mother of one inmate, who is referred to the AFP in front of the fence of lIML.

“It takes really too much time, you can feel the stench from far away. My son and other young people were cut in pieces, decapitated. I just want to be able to lidentifier as soon as possible to begin the steps”, is calling for Raimundo Castro-Leal, father of a prisoner beheaded.

The authorities to ensure, however, that this expectation is expected to be completed in the shortest possible time. “Everything is under control, we will certainly begin to make the bodies today,” assured Mr. Fontes.

- Overpopulation -

The department of Justice has informed on Tuesday that those responsible for the massacre were in the process of being identified and should be transferred to federal prisons to the enhanced security.

Some 130 prisoners have already been moved to a prison in the public re-opened for the occasion, said the government of the State of Amazonia.

after the first elements of the investigation, the killing is considered to be a “revenge” of the local group FDN (Familia do Norte), against the PCC (First commando of the capital), based in Sao Paulo.

According to the brazilian police, the FDN began to take shape in 2007, in response to the attempts at expansion of the CCP to occupy the field in this strategic region, to the border of Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, to control the road of cocaine.

On a background of gang warfare, the massacre also takes root in a fundamental problem of Brazil : the problem of prison overcrowding, with a rate occupying 167% at the national level.

To cope with this problem, the minister of Justice Alexandre de Moraes recalled Tuesday that the federal government had transferred public funds to the States to create 20,000 additional spaces for “to separate the leaders, more dangerous, detainees less dangerous”.
